Katie Zaferes, ITU (International Triathlon Union) Triathlon World Champion and U.S. Olympian, embodies what it means to keep going when faced with an obstacle. Although it has taken her five attempts to become the champion, she kept training and participating.

This past August, two weeks after she had a serious accident in the Tokyo Olympic test event requiring stitches, Zaferes was crowned world champion.
Zaferes’ journey to becoming a world champion started in high school. She decided to try out for the track team to keep her in shape for soccer. “Turns out, I was a natural at running,” she laughs. “In my first season, I won a couple state titles.” Her athleticism carried over into college. “The biggest thing I learned from pivoting is that there is no right way to do life,” she continues to share. “I kind of just thought you go to college, get a job, get married, have kids, etc. I thought it was so linear. What I realize now is that life can go in all different directions and for different reasons. If you’re not happy doing one thing, then pursue something different.
