Five severe warnings for damaging winds are in place for parts of southern Australia, with one covering the entire state of Tasmania as residents brace for wild weather.

Major weather warnings have been issued for vast swathes of Australia’s south, with damaging to locally destructive wind s possible on Tuesday and into Wednesday ahead of a powerful cold front.

Picture: NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw “The risk of damaging winds will extend to Kangaroo Island, the Mount Lofty Ranges and parts of the southeast in the evening,” the BoM said. Winds averaging around 65 to 80 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 130 kilometres per hour are possible over the Alpine peaks on Tuesday night.Further north, more warnings are current for parts of the South Coast and the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales.Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne explained how the wild weather was being driven by a powerful front heading towards the mainland.
