Just over a quarter of the students were distinguished achievers, which meant they achieved 90 to 100 or equivalent, a band six grade, in one or more subjects. Asteer Saleem, who was born in Iraq and arrived in Australia in 2019, scored top marks in Community and Family Studies, Legal Studies, Studies of Religion 1, Arabic Continuers and Arabic Extension, for which she got the best mark in the state.The war in Iraq caused her to miss her primary education and she did not have a chance to learn to read and write Arabic at an early age. After all that pain and sadness and after all we went through, maybe it was for this reason,' she said at the first in course presentation on Tuesday.Girls earned more than 23,000 (56 per cent) of top band results compared to about 18,000 top marks awarded to boys.John Fischetti, from the school of education at the University of Newcastle, said girls had a higher intrinsic motivation to keep studying hard in HSC, though all students had less incentive to go hard to the end with so many getting early offers before their final exams. 'Some students have mailed in the back half of their Year 12, not 100 per cent, but just enough to show up and not worry as much,' he said.
