that"U.K.-based chip designer Arm has told staff it must suspend business with Huawei... to comply with a recent US trade clampdown." This comes about because Arm's designs, which"form the basis of most mobile device processors worldwide" contain “U.S.-origin technology."at the time, this Arm news was potentially devastating. Whether or not a phone runs Android or has access to a Gmail app is insignificant compared to having a working phone in the first place.
The timing of this is perfect for Huawei. Even as its execs were meeting with Arm, a U.S. government official wasthat when the current temporary reprieve from the full U.S. supply chain blacklist expires in November, it is unlikely to be extended. This temporary reprieve has given some respite for existing devices, support contracts and projects, but temporary licenses “don’t often last forever,” U.S. deputy assistant secretary for cyber and international communications Robert Strayer confirmed.
And if Huawei had been holding out for some form of trade war compromise, essentially relying on a reprieve as part of a U.S. deal with China, then that hope was also quashed, with conformation that Huawei would not secure any such compromise. “Recently President Trump has said that he will not give business to Huawei in the U.S. It’s not part of the negotiation,” Strayer told reporters.
