Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie and her newly elected colleague Tammy Tyrrell have signalled their willingness to consider Labor’s plans to legislate its 43 per cent emissions reduction target.

Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has opened the door to backing the Albanese government’s 2030 emissions reduction target, ramping up pressure on the Greens to follow suit or risk being sidelined in negotiations over one of the most momentous policy debates before the new parliament.

The pair’s votes could be crucial in the new parliament, where Labor will need the support of the Greens and one more crossbencher to pass any legislation opposed by the Coalition in the senate. Tyrrell said she wanted Australia to be “as green as possible as soon as possible” but said she was wary of a target that would hamper industry in a way that may imperil jobs.

Greens leader Adam Bandt said last month the party was willing to talk with the government on its plans to legislate the 43 per cent target, but slammed its “take it or leave it” approach while criticising the 2030 target as “weak”. “It sends a signal, if a parliament that hasn’t legislated, that maybe the country’s not serious and maybe a future government, heaven forbid, a Liberal government, might walk it back,” Bowen said.
