The problems began at about 7am
It is believed a lorry driver drove through Coton Hill not realising his vehicle would be unable to get under the railway bridge at the Ellesmere Road/St Michael's Street junction.Motorists travelling into the town from the north were met by long queues.
The AA Roadwatch site said there were reports of traffic problem and slow traffic on A528 Coton Hill both ways between A488 Smithfield Road and B5067 Berwick Road.
