The company stored and processed waste from every hospital in Scotland.

Human body parts and other organic material were found in bins piled up at a waste storage plant, a court has heard.

Garry Pettigrew and Healthcare Environmental Services Limited are on trial accused of illegally storing the body parts and other materials, reports the Daily Record. The 55-year-old was managing director of the firm, that went into liquidation in 2019 after losing NHS contracts in Scotland and England. More than 200 people worked at its plants in Shotts, Lanarkshire, and Dundee.

Sepa officer Mike Smith said: “We visited in order to assess compliance with the site’s permit. We were also assessing the potential impact on the environment and human health, given that waste had been stored there for a period of time.” He told the court: “There had been no change whatsoever to the contents of the fridge – no indication that any waste had been removed. The trailers outside did not appear to have been moved either.”
