Two of Australia's most prominent human rights lawyers, as well as a leading infectious disease expert and late Indigenous activist, are among the recipients of the most prestigious titles in this year's Australia Day honours list, in the 50th year of the awards.

Esteemed human rights lawyer Gillian Triggs has been made a Companion of the Order of Australia. Triggs was the former assistant high commissioner at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and president of the Australian Human Rights Commission. Late Indigenous advocate Galarrwuy Yunupingu, the 1978 Australian of the Year, was also made a Companion of the Order of Australia.
Joining them as ACs in this year's honour roll are epidemiologist Allen Cheng, Victoria's former deputy chief health officer who became one of the public faces of the state's response to COVID-19, as well as High Court Justice James Edelman, and Gondwana Choirs founder Lyn Williams.
