Vince Ruiz III, 33, pleaded guilty to the smuggling on July 6, 2022. He was sentenced Wednesday inRuiz was taken into custody Oct. 5, 2021 after he drove his white Freightliner through the primary inspection lane at the Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias, a Justice Department news release said. Ruiz had a valid driver's license, however, a K-9 alerted authorities to one of the trailers during the inspection.
Officials searched the trailer and discovered 20 migrants inside, behind a locked door. The group included a 16-year-old unaccompanied minor, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. As part of his plea, Ruiz told authorities he drove to Edinburg to pick up the trailer. At some point during the trip, he pulled over to the side of a road in a secluded area and loaded the migrants into the trailer. The plan was to return with the migrants to Cypress, according to the news release.
