A campaigning MSP who secured sick pay for social care staff has demanded the Government reinstate the axed scheme
.
Some staff could not afford to take time off if they were ill and there were fears sick employees were going to work in care homes. “Ministers must not take chances with the welfare of older and disabled people receiving social care. Forcing unwell social care workers into vulnerable settings when Covid hasn’t gone away is dangerous and could put lives at risk.”
“Covid is still here and we are already receiving distressing messages from our members who are being informed that they will not receive normal pay if they are absent with Covid. Undoubtedly this will mean financial hardship for our members or a risk of the virus being spread in the workplaces.”“It’s little wonder that care workers are leaving the profession for better wages where full sick pay is standard.
