The first of several repatriation flights carrying almost 240 Aussies fleeing the war in Israel has landed in London, Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed on Saturday.
The Qantas evacuation flight departed Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Friday afternoon, with Ms Wong saying she is “relieved to know these Australians are on their way home”.
Relieved to know those Australians are on their way home and thank Australian officials and Qantas staff for their work.The federal government is currently working with Israel and Egypt to establish a passage out of Gaza, where 20 people are trapped and wanting to leave. “To all Australians who are in Israel or Gaza if you wish to leave, please do not delay. Please take the first available flight and do not wait for another option,” she said.“I also know that not everyone can easily get to the airport and the security situation is very dangerous in some areas.”
Ms Wong condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel as “abhorrent acts of terror”, adding that Israel has the right to defend itself.
