The federal government has confirmed it will send a pair of planes to New Caledonia to rescue hundreds of Australian holidaymakers trapped amid deadly civil unrest.
Two government-assisted flights have been cleared to repatriate Australians who have been trapped in New Caledonia for some days due to unrest in the French territory that has claimed six lives.
The government is in the process of contacting Australians who had registered their intent to leave the island with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade . It is understood some 300 Aussies had reached out for assistance so far, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was suspected more citizens required help."Passengers are being prioritised based on need," she wrote to X.Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government was working on further flights to help stranded Australians and other tourists.
