'The NHS is in crisis'

Doctors made their feelings overwhelmingly clear as they protested outside the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester. Some said they've been forced to turn suffering patients away for months - blaming a lack of resources and chronic underfunding.

"What you don't get taught is that you're going to see a patient months down the line and you're going to tell them 'here's the treatment for your condition, but it's going to be over a year before we can actually treat you for it and in the meantime you're going to have to suffer and be in pain'. NHS England has warned 'thousands' more appointments are expected to be rescheduled over the course of the week, days after the total number of postponements since strikes began exceeded one million.

Dr Sharma said doctors are leaving the NHS in their 'droves' due to poor working conditions. "We just don't have the staff any more to deal with the pressures in the NHS," he added. "So many of my friends I studied have left the NHS and moved to Australia." The government has urged unions to end 'relentless' industrial action, insisting doctors have received a 'fair and reasonable' pay rise.
