Firefighters are working to get the upper hand on a bushfire in Victoria's Grampians National Park before temperatures soar in the coming days, with authorities saying it could take weeks to fully contain.

An out-of-control bushfire continues to threaten communities in Victoria's west after the inferno tripled in size in just 24 hours. The blaze in Victoria's Grampians National Park has razed 34,000 hectares and continues to grow despite more than 300 firefighters battling to bring it to heel ahead of extreme heat and windy conditions forecast for Thursday.

" Kennedy said two years of dry conditions in western Victoria, particularly in the Grampians National Park, meant fires spread quickly. An emergency evacuation warning remained in place overnight for the Grampians blaze, with residents of several towns, including Bellfield, Halls Gap and Fyans Creek, told to leave immediately. Emergency warnings for those areas have since been downgraded to a 'watch and act', but it is unsafe for residents to return.
