Director Francis Lawrence hints Hunger Games prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has the longest runtime of the series. 'It definitely will be the longest of all the movies.'
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes director Francis Lawrence says the prequel movie's runtime is longer than previous installments in the franchise. After the main Hunger Games series found success in the mid-2010s, Lionsgate is reviving the property with an adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel following a young Coriolanus Snow.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY When Lawrence sat down with Collider, the director said that he estimates that the prequel film will be the longest of all the movies. This will result from the long shooting schedule, which was, while shorter than Catching Fire, around eight days longer than each schedule for both parts of Mockingjay.
"We were scheduled for 85 days. We got a day ahead, so we did it in 84 days, which is shorter than Catching Fire, but longer than each of the Mocking Jays. So it was in between because we shot the Mocking Jays together for 155 days, which ends up being 77-ish days apiece. So it was a little longer than each of the Mocking Jays, but shorter than Catching Fire. It definitely will be the longest of all the movies.
This opens new doors for the franchise, presenting Lawrence with a chance to not only show a different side of Snow with a story ripe with possible tragedy and trauma but, to show a different side of the games. Following the story of Snow as a mentor, Lawrence will be able to explore themes and play with tropes of political intrigue never before explored deeply in the franchise.
Collins has provided a story and world rich with complex characters and expansive lore, and Lawrence has the cinematic opportunity to do with the antagonist what he did with the protagonist: make them deep, and exceptionally complex. The original series' strongest point was its characters, whether that's protagonist Katniss Everdeen, enemy-to-ally Finnick Odair, or the villain Coriolanus Snow himself.
