What is typically the most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season is still to come.
It’s possible. The National Hurricane Center was tracking two tropical waves as of Wednesday. The first and closest wave to watch will be headed for the Caribbean but was east of the Windward Islands on Wednesday morning.
It still appeared disorganized but will be in in more favorable conditions for development over the next few days as it tracks westward, the hurricane center said. The second tropical wave to watch hasn’t even moved off the coast of Africa yet, but it will in a day or two, the hurricane center said. Slow development of that system will also be possible over the weekend as it moves into the eastern Atlantic and tracks westward at 10 to 15 mph. There have been three named storms -- all tropical storms -- so far in the Atlantic in 2022. There hasn’t been a named storm since July 3.
However, what is typically the most active part of the season is still to come, and as of the last forecast update NOAA is still expecting a busy season, with 14 to 20 named storms. Here are the latest predictions for the 2022 hurricane season from NOAA.
