Australia’s largest legal partnership, HWL Ebsworth, has a new leader who is hoping for “not such as combative relationship with the media”.
Already a subscriber?The nation’s largest legal partnership, HWL Ebsworth, has anointed its chief strategy officer Russell Mailler to lead the firm after the sudden death of managing partner Juan Martinez in March.
“At the pleasure of the board: “Russell Mailler has replaced the late Juan Martinez as leader of HWL Ebsworth.The firm said the move to a model with board oversight – commonplace in big firms – reflected “the growth of the practice which requires an evolved governance structure”.and enjoyed far more autonomy than most law firm leaders as he turned HWLE into a low-cost, mid-tier giant and Australia’s largest legal partnership.
Mr Mailler said he and Mr Hopkins would assume responsibility for the firm’s remuneration structure. This had been the sole preserve of Mr Martinez, a point noted by judges“Kris and I will still be determining partner calibrations,” Mr Mailler said. “The remuneration structure will remain as is, however Kris and I will continue to monitor how the firm operates generally, and if there are any areas we can identify to improve the way we operate then we will look at those.
