But young stars like Felix Auger-Aliassime, 22, Jannik Sinner, 21, Lorenzo Musetti, 20, and Holger Rune, 19 are already ranked higher than Kyrgios – not to mention the teenage Spanish prodigy and newly crowned world number oneNine-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic will play Kygrios in an exhibition match on Friday.Kyrgios destroyed his racquet after losing to Khachanov in the US Open, perhaps a sign he knew he only had a brief window to climb the summit.
Australia’s top female player, Ajla Tomljanović, who made the Wimbledon and US Open quarter-finals last year, drew Argentinian world number 192 Nadia Podoroska in the first round.Kyrgios drew Russian world number 98 Roman Safiullin in the first round but will face a brutal path from there with Rune, the ninth seed, potentially waiting in the third round, fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round, and Djokovic in the quarter-final.
