United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has rejected accusations he justified Hamas’ attack on Israel after receiving a call for his resignation.
In an address to the Security Council at the UN's headquarters in New York on Tuesday , the chief declared the October 7 terrorist attack did not happen “in a vacuum” and Palestinians had been “subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation”., claiming Mr Guterres is not fit to lead intergovernmental organisation as he “shows understanding for the campaign of mass murder” of women and children.
“Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of rockets against civilian targets,” he said at the time. “But the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. And those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people,” he said on Tuesday.
It pushed up the death toll to more than 5,700 civilians killed in Gaza since October 7 with more than 16,000 injured.The Jewish state also ordered the complete siege of the enclave, cutting civilians off from food, water, electricity, fuel and other essential supplies.
