Comment: I am terrible at giving gifts. Can the experts teach me how?

I have a problem that is particularly noticeable at this time of year: I am not very good at giving presents. When choosing gifts for loved ones, I am often stuck for ideas and, even when I do come up with a terrific concept, I often get the execution slightly wrong.

I suspect being brilliant at choosing gifts is an innate talent. Still, in the hopes of improving my own weak performance, I asked some gifted gift-givers to share their present selection secrets.“I think it’s something you have, or don’t,” says Beth Macdonald, lifestyle blogger and owner of online gift store Add to Cart. Though this confirms my darkest fears about my competency, she does concede that I can learn to improve. "You need to read people," she tells me.

“You probably think about great presents all the time but aren't mindful about it and then you get what I call 'present amnesia' when it comes time to buy," says Forster. "This is where phone notes help.”
