I can win my first Masters: Herbert eyeing shock result in Augusta debut | iainpayten
In his first, wide-eyed visit to the fabled Augusta National Golf Club last month, Lucas Herbert felt like he was walking on eggshells.
“I felt like the golf course actually suited me more than I expected it to,” Herbert said. “I was concerned for a few shots there that it probably didn’t suit the strengths of my game, but it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be for me. I thought it actually suited me reasonably well in a lot of ways.
Herbert’s reputation as a young golfer on the rise emerged five years ago when he was a first-round leader at the 2016 Australian Open, but was only playing after he’d spotted himself in the Channel Seven pre-tournament promos andLucas Herbert of Australia celebrates with fans after winning The Irish Open in 2021.Herbert went overseas to play on the European Tour in 2018, where his game progressed to a new level.
“I led that tournament from start to finish and people had to come and beat me and they didn’t. To feel like I led that and held my composure and everything and to go on and take the title, that was a big stepping stone too.”Herbert’s form this year has been no less impressive. He shot 68 on the last day to finish tied 7th in a star-packed Arnold Palmer Invitational last month, and then tied 18th in the World Golf Championships Match Play last week, after wins over Tony Finau and world No.
