For Leah and Carmen's mother, Mairelys Kennaway, the transformation has been special to watch as her daughters, stripped of their usual sleep-overs, sport and art commitments, find new ways to connect and compromise.

"They've always been close but I would say it's definitely improved," Parker says, adding that their imaginative games have taken off, with any household object now ripe for play.She says the stress of kinder would sometimes create a "disconnection" between the two siblings, who would occasionally squabble. But now, life's slower pace has helped calm them.Western Sydney mother-of-six Kirsty Parkes has also been moved by the changes in her children.

As well as playing chess and Minecraft, they've been meticulously working on making a Lego movie together, including creating scripts and elaborate props. Meanwhile, 10-month-old James is getting a lot more brotherly attention, particularly from the teens."They always loved him but before they would give him a hug and go off. Now they talk about all the things their baby brother can do.

"It's not helpful to start a fight when you know you can't escape," Ms McCormack says. "When you're having to deal with conflict and sibling rivalry, you're going to find strategies that work."Ms McCormack also says shared experience is key to forming close bonds, and isolation provides that.
