As hundreds of Australians prepare to be evacuated to Darwin from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Darwin, here's a look back at what the passengers on board the ship faced.
The evacuation of hundreds of Australians from the stricken cruise ship Diamond Princess in Japan ends what passengers have described as an anxious, frustrating and tedious experience on holiday.
But it is not the end of the journey for those who have already spent 14 days isolated in their cabins due to fears about COVID-19.announced a Qantas charter flight would fly the passengers from Japan to DarwinIn the Northern Territory, the passengers would spend another 14 days in quarantine at a former mining camp before they can return home.
Of the 223 Australians among the 2,666 guests and 1,045 crew aboard the ship, Health Minister Greg Hunt said he expected most would take up the offer of the flight, although the final numbers have not yet been confirmed. Mr Hunt said the passengers would be screened five times throughout the journey — before leaving the ship, twice on the flight, once at the RAAF Base Darwin and once after they arrive at the Howard Springs camp — to monitor for symptoms of the coronavirus.
The number of confirmed cases on the ship jumped by 88 on Tuesday evening, reaching a total of 542 passengers and crew who have caught the virus.
