The Prime Minister has argued First Nations issues will “fail” to progress without a Voice to Parliament amid calls to axe the upcoming referendum.
Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe accused the Albanese Labor government of pushing a “powerless advisory body” in a fiery National Press Club speech on Wednesday.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to scrap the “tokenistic” Voice to Parliament and called for treaty with Indigenous communities.
“The way to advance reconciliation in this country is for a Yes vote to succeed at the referendum that will be held in the last quarter of this year,” he said at a post National Cabinet press conference. “From my perspective I fail to see how other issues will be advanced if a No vote is recorded.” Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has called on the Prime Minister to axe the referendum and work on Treaty. Rejecting the concept of constitutional recognition, Ms Thorpe said the Voice would eliminate Indigenous sovereignty and assure the First Nations’ communities could not negotiate treaties.
