Nurses outside of hospitals say they are not being used to their full capacity, with one group blaming Medicare rules for holding them back.
abc.net.au/news/gp-nurses-desire-more-health-care-services-in-clinics/102449540In a busy Melbourne clinic, practice nurse Fiona Mardling has just finished making her 20th phone call of the day to deliver test results to a patient.
"It's frustrating as a senior nurse to see this happening and not be able to give those people the proper support and care," she said. When some asked to do more, one in four said their request was denied, most often because there was no financial benefit to the practice or institution. She said allowing them to take the reins on health coaching, prevention and chronic disease management could take the burden off overstretched GPs."Nurses are very good at coordinating care."Ms Booth says the biggest barrier is Medicare and legislative change is needed.
The federal government said the recent budget included lifting the Medicare rebate for nurse practitioners by 30 per cent — but practice nurses missed out.
