As pressure pulsated my veins, I felt a short sharp scratch on my left arm. For the next three days, a dull ache prevented me from sleeping on my preferred side. Overriding this, though, were two feelings from my recent inoculation: relief and gratitude.I finally had my vaccine for monkeypox, a transmittable virus with unpleasant symptoms similar to, but less severe than, smallpox and a fatality rate of up to 6 per cent.
reporting that statistic, perhaps the result of an ethical tussle for editors who must balance reporting the truth with the responsibility of not replicating an AIDS crisis-era stigma.Monkeypox is affecting gay men more because we’re a physically close-knit community. Without over-generalising, it’s fair to say a sizeable cohort of us are liberated in our enjoyment of dance, touch, sex and socialising. AIDS taught many of us to live for the day and prioritise joy.
