EXCLUSIVE: Emiliana Hall, 38, acted as a surrogate for high school best friend Sophie Smith, 37, when Sophie had fertility issues, prompting a generous offer that changed their lives forever
"Sophie and I were so excited to be pregnant together – we were besties from the age of 14 – so I was devastated for her when her 12-week scan revealed she had lost the baby, while my pregnancy continued.
I was pregnant with my second child when I offered to be their surrogate. I knew I wanted it to be quickly after my own and it would be easier while mine were still young. Sophie had lost her second fallopian tube, meaning she could never conceive naturally and the cost of IVF was too large. The chances of them having their own baby were becoming slimmer and slimmer.
It was a very different feeling finding out you’re pregnant with someone else’s baby versus your own. With ours, I wasn’t doing early tests and nature took its course, but with this we all knew the embryo had been implanted. We knew there was a possibility Sophie and Jack could be parents. Covid hit a month before the baby was due, so I was only supposed to have one birthing partner. It was such early days in the pandemic and nobody really understood it, so the hospital let James, Sophie and Jack in for the C-section birth.
