The rollout of drone technology has seen the number of shark sightings increase sharply in recent years.

Official shark sightings at NSW beaches have jumped to their highest level in five years, as aerial drones are increasingly used to spot them.

That beach evacuation is just one of many expected this summer, as the increased use of drones leads to more shark sightings. A Department of Primary Industries report earlier this year attributed that big increase to drones – not more sharks. “This increase is unlikely to represent an increase in sharks along NSW beaches, but more likely to highlight the value of drone aerial surveillance in detecting sharks,” it said.

Michael Coventry from Surf Life Saving NSW’s unmanned aerial vehicle division operates a drone with a speaker attachment to warn swimmers of shark danger.Artificial intelligence software has been developed in recent years to spot sharks at beaches from drone footage, but the current program operated by Surf Life Saving NSW requires drone pilots to rely on the naked eye.
