Monique Ryan mocked the opposition leader in question time about his prospect of becoming prime minister as she and other independents renewed calls for more staffers

Monique Ryan mocked Opposition Leader Peter Dutton about his prospect of becoming prime minister as she and her fellow independent MPs also renewed their demands for extra employees amid a court case challenging the “unreasonable hours” of one of Ryan’s staffers.

Rugg claims she was required to work 70-hour weeks because the office was understaffed as a result of an Albanese government decision to reduce from four to one the number of parliamentary advisers crossbenchers could employ.Ryan, who does not want her former adviser to return to work and argues Rugg was unwilling to perform core tasks, said the staffing allocation for independents should be increased.

Steggall said she was forced to seek donations from members of the community to hire additional staff. She is now accompanied by two advisers during parliamentary sessions in Canberra rather than the single staffer afforded to other crossbenchers.“It’s not reasonable to expect one person to be able to cover communications, media and policy for an MP on the crossbench,” Steggall, the member for the Sydney seat of Warringah, said.

Mr Clennell’s comments follow the Opposition Leader’s criticism of the British model and open support for the US Virginia Class submarines ahead of the upcoming AUKUS announcement. He said as the former defence minister, Mr Dutton pushed to have a Virginia Class nuclear submarine in Australia by 2030, believing it was proven technology while having discussions with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and others.
