A growing number of older people are stuck in living in shared housing as the cost of living crisis makes renting ever more unaffordable
Charities are warning that themeans a growing number of middle-aged people are turning to shared housing, with many still struggling to make ends meet.
“I’m 48 and the way things are going I don’t see any sign of improvement,” he said. “I’m very disappointed and very pessimistic about my future. Your rent is sometimes over 50 per cent of your budget so it doesn’t leave you enough money to actually plan something good for yourself, to actually better yourself.”
Polly Neate, chief executive at Shelter, said: “The chronic shortage of genuinely affordable homes means a growing number of older people are now trapped paying over the odds for highly insecure and often poor-quality private rentals. Few people in their 40s or beyond want to live in a house share but our affordability crisis is so acute some have little choice.”
