There’s no doubt that menopause can, for many of us, be a difficult time. But with podcasts, celebrity-hosted TV shows and social media rife with stories about the horrors of night sweats, sleep issues, mental fog, and embarrassing hot flushes in the middle of work meetings, it’s easy to feel that this time cannot be anything but a non-stop total nightmare.

“You can go through menopause and be depressed for reasons that might not be connected to it, and we’re worried that women will approach the menopause thinking it’s going to be very bad or that there’s a disease process, and may perhaps take a treatment in order to avoid what might happen… we want women to be able to approach menopause with an open mind and with confidence.

Menopausal women often feel embarrassed about hot flushes when they have them in work or in social situations. In her research, Dr Hunter has shown that changing how you think about these symptoms, and tackling the shame and stigma can help. “There are ways to help women feel more confident talking about menopause, and to pick people up on it if they .
