As Scotland’s former finance minister limbers up for another bid to lead the Scottish Nationalists, she faces another round of vitriol over her faith
Kate Forbes is one of the two frontrunners to replace SNP leader Humza Yousaf, who resigned as Scotland’s First Minister earlier this week isn’t someone I’d typically rally to. We might be the same age and both take a great interest in politics. We’re also broadly fiscally conservative, with a belief in sound money.
This contemporary attitude of focusing on identity and little else is hugely detrimental to good politics and good governing. In the case of Yousaf, he achieved nothing of note and has likely opened the door to his party receiving a mighty thwacking from the electorate come the next Holyrood elections.for Scotland’s first female first minister. Were there a record to champion, the SNP would do so. Instead they revert to virtue signalling. By wearing the right lanyards and trumpeting the most right-on causes to receive online praise from their natural supporters, they can shy away from the realities on the ground. Many of Scotland’s voters will care far less about Yousaf’s views on the Israel-Gaza war than what he might do to improve the country’s failing education system and life chances of their children.
