Blake Pavey may not live beyond the age of 45, but he doesn’t want your pity. He just wants you to laugh.
The comedian was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis – a terminal respiratory illness that mostly affects the lungs and digestive system – when he was just six weeks old. Twenty-one years later, his life-threatening condition has inspired his comedy tour, aptly namedBlake Pavey cleverly uses his terminal illness as a means to garner laughter.“CF was just one thing in my life that I could write some funny stuff about that would separate me from the rest,” Pavey says.
“What I enjoy most in comedy is the stuff that does catch you off-guard,” he says. “When the material or the jokes get a little bit sad or a little bit serious, that’s when the audience is really the most off-guard. So, that’s when you can really sting them with some of the best jokes on the show.” “I think it’s just ingrained in a lot of us [Australians] to not take ourselves too seriously ... For a lot of people, self-deprecating humour just brings us closer to everybody else and helps us relate.”
