I have done a lot of babysitting.

I’m going to rule on the side of protecting small children, even when it means embarrassing or irritating or even angering their parents. But I will caution you that this ruleapplies in the case of a clear danger. The two instances you describe, I would say, do fall into that category.

I know it isn’t easy to “interfere”—I know that dread of being scolded by strangers who take offense—but in the end that’s a small price to pay for intervening when a clear and present danger exists. I would say that the best way to do it is by loudly addressing the oblivious parent, not by swooping in . “Oh my goodness! Your baby is chewing on peanut shells! I’m afraid he’s going to choke!” or “Oh, wow, your kid is in the deep end!” should do the trick.
