World No.1 Ash Barty said she is 'so thankful for everything this sport has given me' as she announced her shock retirement from tennis.
The 25-year-old posted an emotional six-minute video to make the announcement during a sit-down interview with her close friend and former doubles partner, Casey Dellacqua.
"I said it to my team multiple times I don’t have it in me, I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want, and kind of everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level anymore," she said. "But to be able to win Wimbledon, my dream, my one true dream in tennis, that really changed my perspective," she said.
Barty decided to withdraw from minor WTA tournaments following the the final Grand Slam to return to Australian and spend much-needed time with the family following six months travelling for competitions.
