Justin Stein has been quizzed about messages sent to his partner Kallista Mutten after prosecutors allege he had killed her nine-year-old daughter Charlise.
Charlise Mutten’s alleged killer has denied he sent texts about “crying” and being the “worst father” because he had “done something”, insisting the nine-year-old was alive and in his ute at the time.
Prosecutors allege Stein killed Charlise between 7.16pm on January 11 and 10.06am on January 12 that year, at his family’s Mount Wilson estate Wildenstein in the Blue Mountains, while her mother was 90 minutes away at Stein’s caravan in Lower Portland. Stein told the jury on Monday that Charlise was “100 per cent” in his ute when he picked up Mutten on January 12. He said she had been sick and was “curled up” on the back seat, and that he gave her a pillow and “a couple of garbage bags” in case she vomited again.
Stein, who said he had been driving, told the court: “I honestly don’t recall getting the message at the time.”
