Charlie Kaufman's new Netflix film is like Tenet for bookish depressives as we watch a couple, and their identities, explode.

Once the pair arrive at the farmhouse, after a long drive's worth of sharp but stilted repartee — Jake's factoids about Wordsworth and the musical Oklahoma! somehow failing to spark his girlfriend's enthusiasm — these signs become more prolific and much more pronounced. She's a nervy, giddy hostess, with a toothsome smile that verges on a pained grimace ; he's a dopey philistine, of the sort who wants you to know that he thinks abstract art is a "con job".
It seems to be catching: though Lucy initially weathers her parental interrogation bravely, she finds herself tripping over words and the details of her own biography, and struggling to recount how she and Jake met at trivia one night without veering into contradiction . I hesitate to go into more detail, however, for fear I'd be met with a cry of "spoilers!" Suffice it to say, the fact that I'm Thinking of Ending Things winds up being closer to that kind of film — one that pivots on a hokey twist — than anything Kaufman has produced before is the reason it left me a little deflated.
