I ended up moving to Chicago in part because “gender identity” has been included in Illinois’s anti-discrimination laws. It wouldn’t have been possible without the financial ability to make such a move, but it was there that I had a streak of luck that makes me an outlier in my community: I got my first job as a writer through a social work program that helped trans people look for work.
