Medibank is facing a fresh class action case led by Slater & Gordon, with customers explaining the dramas caused when their private data was published online.
Gordon alleges that Medibank and ahm failed to protect or take reasonable steps to protect customers’ personal information from unauthorised access or disclosure, failed to destroy or de-identify former customers’ personal information, and failed to comply with legal obligations in collecting, using, storing and disclosing customer information.also the subject of class actions
These files were dumped online showing customers who were diagnosed with HIV, had received treatment for drug and alcohol addiction andThe Federal Court is likely to seek to consolidate the various class actions, and Medibank could face a sizable compensation bill. The company put out an ASX statement on Friday morning saying it would defend the proceedings.
The law firm said Medicare card numbers of at least 2.8 million Medibank customers were released by the hackers, along with health claims data in respect to at least 480,000 customers, passport numbers and country of issue, verbal identification passwords, employers, employee ID numbers and visa details.
