Black women have never needed powers to be superheroes.
From my earliest days, I've been the oldest man in my family. One grandfather died when I was 3 years old, the other wasn’t around much, and I later found out he wasn’t actually related to me. My dad was an absentee father. My great-grandmother and grandmother had only daughters. I was the first new boy brought into the family in a generation, raised by Black women.
It’s no wonder why my mom absolutely lost it at the funeral. It wasn’t just losing a loved one; it was losing a pillar. If our family was a house, she was the load-bearing wall. I saw the arguments my mother would have with potential partners, colleagues and members of the community. Everyone wanted to change her to be like them, but because she knew she was the steward of so much more, she declined over and over. It was the most incredible show of strength on a daily basis that I’ve ever seen, and what’s wild is that for Black women, this is not uncommon. In the film, no one exemplifies this more than Angela Bassett's Queen Ramonda, T’Challa’s grieving mother.
