'I swapped the high life in Abu Dhabi for tackling fires in Greater Manchester - I haven't looked back'
When Helena Brown moved back to the UK after years spent travelling the world as a flight attendant, she was at a loss over what to do next with her life.
Helena took part in a national challenge for firefighters staged in Manchester and was crowned British Female Champion. In full kit and wearing breathing apparatus she ran to the top of a three-storey tower, hauled a hose up from the ground and then ran back down the tower with it. "I moved back to the UK in 2018 and didn't know what to do at first. But I followed my passion of keeping fit and trained to be a personal trainer with David Lloyd's company, and I was offered a position with the firm."
She trains up to five times a week outside of work at the gym, and does CrossFit training, hiking, and yoga. "In preparing for the contest I had been a bit too intense at times. I paced myself in the actual race." He is committed to increasing the number of women firefighters and those from ethnic minorities. Currently there are 106 women firefighters out of 1373 in total - just 7.2 percent.
Firefighters from all over the country converged on Manchester city centre as GMFRS hosted the British Firefighter Challenge. The event saw firefighters from the UK and abroad, compete in a test of speed and stamina.
