Abortion is expected to have an impact on midterm elections, but experts are uncertain whether other topics could resonate more among voters.
Marsha Beebe was sitting with a couple of 20-somethings at a foldout table with a script and a cellphone. She couldn't believe she was here again.
Beebe spoke about abortion-rights candidates for the U.S. Senate, then Arizona governor, then Maricopa County attorney. "It's a driving force in this electorate, and people are very much paying attention to it," said political pollster Paul Bentz of local consulting firm HighGround Inc.Bentz and others are uncertain what portion of the electorate sees abortion as the No. 1 issue, and whether other topics or a candidate's personality could weigh more heavily as people cast their ballots.
More Republicans registered than Democrats, but the Democratic Party saw a larger gain day-over-day, coming in at a 450% increase compared with Republicans' 370%. The upticks could suggest the abortion issue galvanized voters across the political spectrum. “That’s about how all the doors go these days,” Gunnigle said as she walked back toward the sidewalk.
He'll likely vote for Rachel Mitchell, the Republican incumbent running for county attorney against Gunnigle. Mitchell hasn't shut the door on enforcing the abortion bans.
