Every weekday for 30 minutes, I sit with my kids Ford David, 7, and Carolina Rubí, 6, at the dining table to work on Spanish lessons on Duolingo Kids, a language-learning app for children. For me, speaking Spanish is a way to feel closer to my Latino culture and community that I'd love to pass down to my kids.I grew up believing you couldn’t be a Latino — not a “real” one, anyway — without speaking Spanish. It’s what as a child I was told again and again by my immigrant parents.
What will being Latino, or even half-Latino, mean for him and my daughter years from now? No sé. The truth is I really don’t know. But I can’t deny the weight of the responsibility I feel to teach them about our roots and our culture — and yes, our language, too — is heavy. On some days, it’s crushing. And I feel so defeated and alone.
Things were much different for me in the ‘90s when I was growing up in Miami. There, Spanish was everywhere. It was on street signs and store names and in the chatter at the nearby Cuban-owned Sedano’s supermarket. The city was largely Latino and all of our neighbors and friends spoke Spanish. At all times, the language ruled at my parents’ multi-generational home, too. In fact, that was the rule my sisters and I had to live by: “En la escuela inglés, en la casa español.
When I'm helping my daughter Carolina Rubí, 6, complete her daily Spanish lesson on her tablet, all I can think of is my mom helping me learn Spanish when I was her age. For me, teaching my kids Spanish is about "giving them the gift" my own Latino parents gave me when they taught me how to speak the language.
In the coming years, Mark told me, views on Hispanic and Latino identity are very likely to change in the U.S. He pointed to rising intermarriage rates, which are creating an increasingly diverse and multiracial population here, as a major reason why.
