Suddenly I’m buying really good quality clothes at M&S, appreciating vegetables at a nice local shop, going to local fetes and spending my evening watching a BBC dramaI’ve got an announcement to make. I have taken the ultimate step into adulthood. Done something life-changingly mature, I’ve become a real adult, a proper grown-up. I have joinedI blame autumn really.
If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d end up this way I would never have believed you. I spent much of my childhood being taken to various great houses and gardens, touching things which were politely labelled to the contrary, buying plastic tat in the gift shop and begging for a giant hot chocolate in the café. But like all children I became a teenager and therefore found the entire National Trust experience utterly boring.
That’s the thing about the National Trust. Like so many other great British institutions it sits quietly in the background waiting for you to be ready for it. And then suddenly you’re buying really good-quality clothes at M&S, appreciating vegetables at a nice local shop, going to local fetes and choosing to spend your evenings at home watching a BBC drama.
