Is making a complaint a good idea and if so, what are the potential ramifications for my career? | Jonathan Rivett in work therapy.

I landed an interview for my dream job and was asked beforehand to prepare for a skills test and separate systems test. I have limited experience in both areas – and this was made clear in my resume.

Why would a professional be so rude? I asked Professor Denise Jepsen from the Department of Management at Macquarie University to offer her expert advice. She told me what you’ve experienced is a failure of candidate management, which is more important nowadays than perhaps ever before. “First, you have found out enough about the manager – rude, dismissive and unprofessional – that it sounds like you don’t want to work there after all. Second, many organisations use their applicant tracking system to create a pool of potential candidates for later vacancies. In case they have another vacancy that might suit you down the track – with a different manager – you probably wouldn’t want to have your record of complaint next to your name.“So, manage your rage.

Professor Jepsen says that a smart HR team will go a long way to avoiding this by carefully assessing all the elements of their recruitment system.
