Maddy Alexander-Grout was left £40,000 in debt after her spending addiction spiralled out of control

It was a noise Maddy Alexander-Grout dreaded every single morning – the sound of letters being pushed through her door.

She began taking out loans and treating herself to expensive shoes and bags, regularly paying for her friends’ drinks whenever they hit the town. The former student soon found herself unable to pay for her gas, electricity and water bills which affected her relationship with her flatmates. She was forced to come clean to her boss but persuaded him to let her keep her job. “They basically told me I couldn’t work with any banking clients,” she added. “It was embarrassing.”

“The whole thing was really stressful,” she added. “I constantly lived in a state of fear that I was going to be homeless. The whole of those 10 years were really scary.”
