Homes were destroyed, local landmarks were razed and hundreds of tourists left stranded after wildfires tore through the Hawaiin island of Maui.

"He ended up dropping us off here [at the airport] and our stuff is still at our hotel. So we are here at the airport with the flight tonight and no stuff.Many locals lost their homes, businesses and livelihood.Renowned singer Napua Greig, who lives on Maui, said a lot of the island was without power and many of its scenic areas were destroyed."Front Street, which is where a lot of our visitors like to go and shop and dine on the waterfront, is now gone.

"We knew we needed to evacuate when we could hear the explosions happening from the surrounding businesses, the gas station down the street from us, the condominium across the road from us, and within minutes that fire had jumped into our neighbour's yard and when that had happened we just got in the car with the clothes on our backs," he said.

He said authorities have warned the death toll of six is likely to rise as hundreds of people remain unaccounted-for.
