'I was relieved. I felt I was home': Aged 58, Sharon discovered she had 15 siblings in the next state

When Victorian woman Sharon Haines took to Facebook at the age of 58, to search for her foster sister, she had no idea of the revelations that were to come. She learned from her "foster" sister that the two were, in fact, biological sisters. The news took time to "digest", but Ms Haines has spent the seven years since making the most of everything and everyone she has.

It was not until Ms Haines and Rosanne reconnected after 20 years that Ms Haines discovered they were biological sisters.Ms Haines has pieced together her personal history with help from family. After living without family on the Australian mainland in Melbourne, completely unaware of having Indigenous heritage until her late 50s, Ms Haines found Rosanne's revelations, relating to her family and heritage, very surprising."It didn't scare me, it just needed to be digested properly.

"And she said, 'If the body has blocked it, it's got to be bad, and you don't want to get it out,' so I didn't.The discovery of her large family in Tasmania prompted Ms Haines to move from Melbourne back to the island state."As soon as I put my foot on the tarmac, I felt I was home," she said.Four of the brothers Ms Haines started getting to know around seven years ago.

She immediately contacted a local stonemason and hired him to make a headstone for her mother, featuring the Aboriginal flag.
