Angela Dullaghan said that during her decades-long battle for the correct diagnosis, she was wrongly told she had an incurable condition known as interstitial cystitis
Dipstick tests are paper tests with a chemical strip that are dipped into a urine sample. They change colour depending on what substances are present in the sample and whether any levels are higher than normal.
“It came out of research conducted by Edward Kass, an eminent infectious disease doctor who was studying kidney infections in pregnant women in the 1950s,” she said. “It was a study conducted with a very small sample of women, and from that investigation, the standard was developed for all UTIs in all women and all men.
She would “frequently” go to the GP for a urine test, only to be told she did not have an infection. Ms Dullaghan now puts this down to the flawed testing methods but said at the time it started to leave her feeling that the condition was “all in my [her] head”.
