A cryptic quote Brittany Higgins posted to social media in the hours before attending peace talks with her former boss, WA Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds, is set to become a key piece of evidence in the pair’s high-stakes defamation row.

Reynolds’ lawyer Martin Bennett asked the court to follow a document swap schedule that would avoid duplication and reduce the cost of a trial, warning the two major pieces of litigation between three individuals — not media organisations with unlimited funds — would be lengthy and costly. And that evidence would include accounts that contradicted Higgins’ claims she felt isolated during the trip she took to Perth before the federal election in 2019, several months after she claimed fellow staffer Bruce Lehrmann raped her in the then-cabinet minister’s parliamentary office.

Six months later, Reynolds launched defamation action against Higgins based on two social media posts in which Higgins accused Reynolds of using the press to harass her.
